IMPHAL, Feb 25: In a significant breakthrough, Manipur police commandos arrested a wanted insurgent and active member of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) on Monday, for his alleged involvement in the cold-blooded murder of a 19-year-old student.
The accused, identified as Thangjam Thoungamba Meitei (26), was apprehended following a special operation based on specific inputs from vigilant citizens. Police arrested Meitei at Tiger Camp, Sagolmang, in Imphal East district. According to authorities, Meitei is accused of being involved in the daylight murder of Laishram Malemnganba Meitei, a 19-year-old student from Moirang Kampu, which took place on February 10, 2025.
The body of the young student was discovered near his residence on the same day. Following the tragic incident, the Manipur government declared Thangjam Thoungamba Meitei and another accused, Huiningsubam Yumlingba alias Poireinganba (31), wanted.
A police official confirmed that Meitei is now in custody, and authorities have launched an ongoing search operation to apprehend the second accused, Yumlingba.
