IMPHAL, April 26: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the anti-smuggling unit of the Manipur Police arrested an alleged smuggler and seized narcotics worth approximately Rs 5 crore on the international black market during separate raids in Thoubal district on Friday, an official said on Saturday.
During the operation, police recovered 3.9 kg of Brown Sugar, seven soap cases containing suspected Heroin powder (12 grams per case), an additional 0.53 grams of Brown Sugar, seven Codeine bottles of 100 ml each, and seven mobile phones. The suspect, Wangmayum Barul Alam, was arrested following the seizure.
Authorities also recovered Rs 1.14 lakh in cash suspected to be proceeds from drug sales.
The operation was carried out at Alam’s residence in Lilong Haoreibi Turel Ahanbi Darul Uloom Makha under the jurisdiction of Lilong Police Station in Thoubal District. The surprise raid was conducted with the assistance of central forces.
Following Alam’s arrest, the police team launched a follow-up operation based on information provided by the accused. During the subsequent raid at the residence of Yangkhubam Hafi, also in Darul Uloom Makha under Lilong Police Station, authorities seized 44 Spasmo-Proxyvon Plus capsules, two strips containing seven Nitrosun 10 tablets, two strips containing 20 Diazepam tablets, and two Codeine bottles.
However, Yangkhubam Hafi managed to evade arrest and is currently absconding, according to the police.
The police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the fugitive and stated that further investigations are underway to dismantle the network involved in the illegal drug trade.
