IMPHAL, Feb 5: Manipur currently has approximately 10,000 cancer cases, as reported by Dr. Y Indibor, Clinical Oncologist Consultant at Karkinos, a cancer care center and research institute in the state. Dr. Indibor shared this information during the observance of World Cancer Day 2025 on February 4.
The state has seen around 1,500 new cancer cases annually over the past five years, according to the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP). Dr. Indibor highlighted that cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the state and mentioned that the age-adjusted incidence rate (AAR) of cancer is higher in females than in males in Manipur.
In males, the most common types of cancer are lung, stomach, and nasopharynx, while in females, breast, lung, and cervix uteri cancers are most prevalent.
Dr. Indibor also identified the major factors contributing to the high cancer rates: high prevalence of tobacco use in both smoked and smokeless forms, and the lack of adequate healthcare facilities and efforts to combat cancer in the region.
