IMPHAL, June 17: Manipur on Monday recorded seven fresh cases of COVID-19, raising the total number of infections in the current wave to 20, as health authorities ramp up surveillance and response measures across the state.
According to officials from the State Health Department, 14 of the 20 confirmed cases have been reported from Imphal West district, followed by three from Imphal East, and one each from Kakching, Thoubal, and Bishnupur districts—all within the Imphal valley region. The surge began on June 9, when a 23-year-old woman from Bishnupur tested positive after developing COVID-like symptoms. Her samples, collected on June 5 at a private clinic in Imphal, were confirmed positive on June 9.
With the increase in cases, Manipur Health Services Director Dr. Chambo Gonmei has urged residents to remain alert, citing rising infection trends in other parts of the country. He emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and monitoring symptoms.
In light of the situation, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla chaired a high-level COVID-19 review meeting at the Raj Bhavan on Monday. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, senior Health Department officials, and other key functionaries. Discussions focused on preparedness, contact tracing, availability of medical resources, and implementation of health ministry advisories.
The review followed alerts from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), which recently issued guidelines to all states and union territories to enhance COVID-19 surveillance, testing, and hospital readiness amid growing fears of a possible resurgence.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely, with district administrations asked to ensure readiness at both public and private healthcare facilities.
