IMPHAL, April 4: In a major move to address environmental concerns, the Government of Manipur has announced a complete ban on single-use plastic products across the state, effective from April 15, 2025. Ahead of the enforcement, a state-wide awareness campaign will be launched on April 7, 2025, to ensure public cooperation and preparedness.
The decision was conveyed during a consultative meeting held in Imphal, where A.K. Sinha, Principal Secretary of Environment and Climate Change, urged citizens to extend full support to the initiative. He highlighted the harmful effects of single-use plastics on human health and the environment, emphasizing the need to switch to safer alternatives.
“The government will take all necessary steps to fully implement the Manipur Plastic Policy 2022. Everyone must be aware that single-use plastic is harmful to both health and the environment. Instead of using these hazardous products, we must switch to safer alternatives. The government has already initiated the ban on single-use plastic, and inspections will begin on April 15 to ensure strict enforcement,” stated A.K. Sinha.
To ensure compliance, the government has introduced strict penalties for violations. Fines will range from Rs 200 to Rs 2,000, depending on the amount of plastic involved and whether the offender is a repeat violator.
The Environment and Climate Change Department will spearhead the campaign in collaboration with the Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD), and the Manipur Pollution Control Board. The campaign will target both urban and rural areas, aiming to raise awareness about the consequences of plastic pollution and the importance of sustainable alternatives.
Authorities have called upon businesses, local bodies, and the public to cooperate in making Manipur a plastic-free state.
