IMPHAL, Jan 5: Manipur is set to host a two-day mixed martial arts (MMA) fight night in early April, with professional bouts scheduled for April 4, as part of an event aimed at promoting the state’s growing MMA scene.
Titled “Manipur Pride MMA: The Rise of Warriors 1,” the event is being organised by BonJovi MMA and Fitness to showcase local talent and provide a competitive platform for amateur fighters aspiring to turn professional. The programme will begin on April 3 with amateur contests, followed by professional fights on the second day.
Professional MMA fighter Nongmaithem Bonjovi said the event will feature athletes not only from Manipur but also prominent fighters from across the Northeast. Highlighting existing challenges, he noted that despite the state’s rich pool of talent, many athletes lack structured support and exposure. “This event aims to address those challenges and serve as a stepping stone to bigger opportunities for fighters,” he said.
Event director Rangam Chiru said the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between amateur circuits and professional MMA while opening pathways to national and international tournaments. Organisers added that fighter screening and selection would be conducted about a week before the event, with both amateur and professional athletes expected to compete.
The upcoming fight night reflects the rising popularity of MMA in Manipur—a state widely recognised for producing top boxers and combat sports athletes—and signals the steady growth of organised mixed martial arts in the region.
