SENAPATI, Dec 31: The Cultural Regale 2024, a two-day celebration of Mao heritage and traditions, concluded successfully on December 27 and 28, 2024, at Asufii Christian Institute, Punanamei Mao. Organized under the theme ‘Honouring Our Ancestors’, the event drew approximately 1,300 participants, including 1,000 delegates representing 31 registered units.

The program was graced by the presence of Losii Dikho, Hon’ble MLA of 48 Mao Assembly Constituency, Government of Manipur, alongside Father Joseph M. Thohrii, Vice Principal of St. Joseph College, Ukhrul, who served as the Resource Person. Special invitees included representatives from the Naga Student Federation, Mao Council, Mao Naga Women Welfare Association, Mao Officers Union, Naga Students’ Federation, Angami Students Union, Senapati District Students’ Association, and Maram Students’ Union.

The event opened with a warm welcome from Pfokrehrii Matekho Pekosii, President of the Mao Students’ Union, followed by a thought-provoking theme exposition by Lokho Ozho, Former President of MSU. Khriesamhalie David Mere, President of the Angami Students Union, delivered greetings, emphasizing cultural solidarity and the importance of preserving ancestral traditions.
In his keynote address, Hon’ble MLA Losii Dikho celebrated the unifying power of culture and encouraged students to embody honesty, wisdom, and selflessness in their leadership roles. He acknowledged the contributions of the Tenyimia family, particularly the Angami community, and highlighted the beauty and potential of Mao land. Other speakers, including Nenio Mao, General Secretary of the Mao Officers Union, and M. Athikho Joseph, President of the Mao Council, stressed the significance of cultural preservation, with the latter describing culture as a way of life.
Father Joseph M. Thohrii inspired attendees to internalize their cultural values beyond external appearances and reflected on the influence of global trends, urging participants to take ownership of their heritage. He closed his address with an optimistic vision for 2025 as a Year of Hope, motivating the audience to work towards their goals while preserving their identity.

The celebration featured vibrant cultural competitions, highlighting the richness of Mao traditions through folk dances, songs, tales, and unique contests such as horn blowing, howling, and the Khetsii Kakhe competition. The event also included special performances by The Story Weavers and Sprouting Oak Academy, Senapati, which showcased traditional artistry, songs, and recitations.
An art and craft exhibition titled ‘Working Tools: Cultivation to Harvest’ displayed traditional tools, clothing, ornaments, crochet, paintings, and other cultural artifacts, reflecting the creativity and skills of the Mao community. Separate stalls further showcased various crafts, adding to the immersive cultural experience.

The two-day program concluded with a lively Gala Night, bringing the celebration to a memorable close. The Cultural Regale 2024 served as a powerful testament to the resilience and vibrancy of Mao heritage, leaving participants inspired to cherish and uphold their cultural legacy.
