Shillong, September 17: Meghalaya Governor C.H. Vijayashankar on Tuesday administered the oath of office and secrecy to eight new ministers of the Meghalaya government, marking a significant mid-term reshuffle.
The newly inducted ministers include Timothy D. Shira (Resubelpara), Metbah Lyngdoh (Mairang), Sanbor Shullai (South Shillong), Lahkmen Rymbui (Amlarem), Brening A. Sangma (Dalu), Sosthenes Sohtun (Jirang), Wailadmiki Shylla (Jowai), and Methodius Dkhar (Mawshynrut).
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, said the decision was made following extensive consultations with coalition partners and senior leaders, with a strong emphasis on balanced regional representation. He highlighted that although the National People’s Party (NPP) holds a majority, the government remains committed to honoring agreements made with its coalition allies in 2023.
“Cabinet reshuffles are never simple, but they are necessary to ensure inclusivity and balance. This is an opportunity to reset and strengthen governance as we prepare for the next phase of priorities,” Sangma said, adding that senior cabinet members would guide the new inductees in their roles.
The Chief Minister also underlined the importance of including leaders from diverse districts, including Ri-Bhoi and West Garo Hills, to reflect the aspirations of the people across the state.
The swearing-in ceremony, held in Shillong, was attended by senior political leaders, top government officials, and family members of the new ministers. The allocation of portfolios to the newly sworn-in members is expected to be announced soon.
