SHILLONG, Jan 16: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday said he is in constant touch with the Centre and North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) authorities to help resolve the ongoing crisis at the central university, which has severely impacted students and staff.
Describing the situation as a “deadlock,” Sangma said the state government is playing the role of a mediator, as NEHU comes directly under the jurisdiction of the central government. He said discussions are being held at multiple levels, including with the Union ministry concerned and NEHU officials, to find an acceptable solution without interfering with the university’s autonomy.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the complexity of the issue, noting that several recommendations could not be implemented due to ground realities, leading to further complications. He assured that the state government is making sincere efforts, with the education minister actively engaged in talks with NEHU authorities.
Sangma said the government’s priority is to alleviate the suffering of students, employees and casual workers affected by the crisis, particularly regarding the release of pending salaries. While reiterating that the matter is beyond the state’s direct jurisdiction, he stressed that the government is taking the issue seriously and will continue efforts to facilitate a resolution in the best interest of the people.
