SHILLONG, Jan 31: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has ruled out the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, citing the region’s secular nature and its tribal diversity. The decision, made by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government, emphasizes the need to respect the distinct identity of the various tribal communities in Meghalaya.
Sangma explained that the UCC would not be suitable for the country, given India’s diverse traditions and cultures. He further noted that any legislation, such as the UCC, should only be adopted based on its content and whether it would benefit the state.
While Meghalaya has chosen not to implement the UCC, Assam’s Chief Minister has expressed support for it, stating that there is no opposition to the UCC in Assam. He also urged people not to target or defame any community, emphasizing that modern practices among Muslims no longer involve polygamy.
On the other hand, Uttarakhand made history on January 27, 2025, by becoming the first Indian state to implement the Uniform Civil Code.
