SHILLONG, Nov 12: The Meghalaya government has made it mandatory for all commercial passenger vehicles in the state to prominently display details of drivers and conductors, in a move aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and passenger safety.

According to a notification issued by the Transport Department, all vehicle permit holders—including taxis, auto-rickshaws, buses, tourist vehicles, national permit passenger vehicles, and school or educational institution transport—must display specific details such as the driver’s name, driving license number, contact number, and permanent address.

Where applicable, similar details of conductors, including license number and contact information, must also be displayed. The information is to be presented in English and one regional language for better accessibility and must be placed either on the dashboard or the rear side of the front seat, ensuring clear visibility for passengers.

The Transport Department stated that the directive is part of the government’s broader effort to improve passenger security and accountability in public transportation. Existing permit holders have been given 30 days from the date of notification to comply with the new regulation.
