SHILLONG, Nov 23: The Meghalaya High Court has decided to review the ongoing inquiries into allegations of mismanagement at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) before issuing any further directives. The matter was adjourned to December 6, 2024, with the court awaiting the report from the enquiry committee constituted by the Ministry of Education.
The committee’s report, which is to probe allegations against NEHU Vice-Chancellor PS Shukla and administrative irregularities, is due by November 29, 2024.
During a hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding the NEHU crisis, Chief Justice IP Mukherji and Justice B Bhattacharjee remarked that it would be appropriate to wait for the committee’s findings and recommendations before taking further action. They also stated that the court would consider any corrective actions that may be recommended by the committee or taken by the University itself.
The court further noted that the hunger strike by a section of NEHU students had been called off following the court’s previous order on November 20, 2024.
