SHILLONG, Nov 26 (NNN): In a bid to curb potential threats amid issues mounting in Bangladesh, the Meghalaya state government has enforced a two-month night curfew from 8 pm to 6 am within a radius of one kilometre from the zero line of the international border in East Khasi Hills district.
The order issued by District Magistrate RM Kurbah on Wednesday prohibited movement of people at the international border with the intention to cross the international boundary with Bangladesh or sneak into Indian territory.
It also disallowed unauthorized procession or unlawful assembly of five or more persons and carrying arms or other instruments that can be used as weapons, including sticks, rods and stones, in and around the Indo-Bangladesh border, besides illegal and undesirable activities including smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betel nut, betel leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes and chai patti.
The order was passed to prevent any likelihood of cross-border movement of unwanted elements, members of proscribed militant groups and smugglers by taking advantage of certain portions of the border areas in East Khasi Hills which are still porous.
“Such illegal and undesirable activities if not prevented may lead to uncontrollable cross-border infiltration resulting in breach of peace and tranquility in the district,” the order stated.
