SHILLONG, March 24: The NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU unit have intensified their demand for the removal of North-Eastern Hills University (NEHU) Vice Chancellor, Prof PS Shukla, and Registrar Col Omkar Singh. In a joint letter to the NEHU Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA), the student organizations urged the non-teaching staff to refuse compliance with any instructions, orders, or decisions issued by the VC and registrar.

The students accused Prof Shukla of neglecting his duties for an extended period, stating he has been on continuous leave for 127 days and has failed to resume his responsibilities since September 15 last year. They also criticized his attempt to resume his duties remotely from Delhi, calling it a violation of the NEHU Act, 1973, and asserting that there are no provisions in the university’s regulations allowing for remote work.

The NEHUSU and KSU further condemned the actions of Registrar Col Omkar Singh, accusing him of neglecting his duties by not returning to the university since his leave began. They also labeled both Prof Shukla and Col Singh as “persona non grata,” citing the support they have from various civil organizations and the local community. The student unions urged the faculty to join their stance or risk being seen as contrary to the interests and welfare of the NEHU student body.
