SHILLONG, Nov 24: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Monday urged the Meghalaya government to tighten security and regulatory measures at all state entry points amid concerns over a possible influx of people allegedly fleeing West Bengal and Assam during ongoing electoral roll revisions.
In a statement, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said the organisation was “deeply concerned” about unregulated movement into Meghalaya, warning that such inflows could pose risks to public safety, internal security and the legal rights of indigenous citizens. He called for immediate government intervention, noting that Meghalaya has the authority to enforce verification and entry regulations under existing legal provisions.
The group demanded mandatory registration and identity checks for all individuals arriving from SIR-affected (Special Intensive Revision) regions, along with the deployment of police and district officials at major entry gates to ensure compliance. It also sought activation of emergency coordination mechanisms involving DCs, SPs and border management units, backed by a formal government notification detailing legal procedures and administrative action.
HYC further stressed the need for interstate coordination with West Bengal and Assam to prevent undocumented movement. According to official data, 46 Bangladeshi nationals have already been apprehended in Meghalaya in 2025 for illegal entry.
Calling the situation “a serious issue of public safety and legal responsibility,” the organisation has urged the state government to act swiftly and decisively within the framework of law.
