Meghalaya Signs MoU with National Rifle Association of India to Boost Shooting Sports

SHILLONG, July 9: In a major push to promote shooting sports in the Northeast, the Government of Meghalaya has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and the Shooting Association of Meghalaya. The agreement aims to transform the state into a national hub for shooting sports through infrastructure development, training programs, and competitive events.

The MoU was signed on July 8 in the presence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and NRAI President Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, who both expressed optimism about the state’s potential in the sport. The signing ceremony was also attended by senior officials, including Sports Commissioner Dr. Vijay Kumar D., Director of Sports & Youth Affairs D.D. Shira, and Assistant Director P.B. War Nongbri.

As part of the agreement, NRAI has committed to hosting one Open India Shooting Championship in Meghalaya every year, an event expected to draw over 4,000 athletes and boost the local economy. The collaboration will focus on setting up world-class shooting infrastructure, providing technical training, and equipping athletes with access to modern gear.

Chief Minister Sangma highlighted that the initiative reflects a new chapter in Meghalaya’s sporting journey, inspiring youth to pursue shooting seriously and compete at national and international levels. NRAI President Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo lauded the state’s proactive approach and called the partnership a model for other states.

The MoU also outlines shared responsibilities between the three signatories in organizing competitions, identifying grassroots talent, and offering structured coaching programs. Signatories included K. Sultan Singh, Secretary General of NRAI; D.D. Shira, Director of Sports & Youth Affairs; and John F. Kharshiing, President of the Shooting Association of Meghalaya.
