Shillong, August 7: The Meghalaya government is set to frame a new law aimed at tackling the issue of unchecked influx into the state, following hurdles in implementing the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the proposed legislation will focus on creating a robust monitoring mechanism to track the movement of people into and out of Meghalaya. He cited multiple factors influencing the decision, including the law-and-order situation and developments in neighbouring Assam and across the Bangladesh border.

“Monitoring the overall situation is a matter of concern given the changes in Assam, developments in Bangladesh, and the broader law-and-order scenario. It is important for us to have a very strong mechanism,” Sangma told reporters on Thursday.

The Chief Minister added that the government will hold consultations with various stakeholders, including legal experts, senior ministers, and officials, before finalising the details. “We faced challenges in implementing MRSSA, so we are working on something new. It’s too early to give details, but we will engage with stakeholders before making it public,” he said.

Sangma also briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the current border situation between Assam and Meghalaya, as well as along the India-Bangladesh frontier. He stressed the need for coordinated internal security measures to maintain peace and order in the region.
