AIZAWL, July 1: In a major anti-narcotics operation, security forces seized a large consignment of Methamphetamine tablets worth over ₹6.67 crore in Mizoram’s Champhai district, which borders Myanmar. A Myanmar national was arrested in connection with the case, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The operation was jointly conducted by the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police based on a tip-off. On June 29, a checkpoint was set up at Zokhawthar village, a known transit route near the international border. During a thorough search, authorities discovered 20,200 Methamphetamine tablets weighing 2.22 kilograms in possession of the suspect.
Methamphetamine, commonly known as “meth” or “ice,” is a potent and illegal stimulant that severely affects the central nervous system. The drug is banned in India under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Following the seizure, the arrested individual and the confiscated contraband were handed over to the Mizoram Police at Zokhawthar for further investigation and legal proceedings, according to an official statement issued by the Assam Rifles.
Security agencies have ramped up surveillance in the region, which has increasingly become a key corridor for drug trafficking, given its proximity to Myanmar—a known source of synthetic drugs being smuggled into India and other parts of Southeast Asia.
The successful seizure highlights the continuing efforts of law enforcement agencies to tackle the growing menace of cross-border drug trafficking in the Northeast.
