Aizawl, August 11: The Mizoram government has begun collecting biometric data of Myanmar nationals who have taken shelter in the state following the 2021 military coup and continuing unrest in Myanmar.

The state-wide exercise, which records fingerprints and photographs, is being implemented across all 11 districts under the supervision of the Home Department. According to officials, nearly 2,000 refugees have already been registered. District administrations are working in coordination with local NGOs and civil society groups that have been extending humanitarian support to the displaced communities.

Mizoram currently hosts over 30,000 Myanmar nationals, many of whom are staying in community halls or with relatives. The influx began after Myanmar’s military intensified its crackdown on rebel forces and pro-democracy demonstrators.

With a 510-kilometre shared border with Myanmar, Mizoram remains one of the main entry points for those fleeing the violence, making the biometric drive a key step in documenting and managing the refugee population.
