AIZAWL, April 5: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday announced plans to develop Thenzawl, a census town in central Mizoram’s Serchhip district, and its surrounding areas as a ‘Peace City’ envisioned to accommodate a population of about 10 lakh.

The announcement was made while addressing a conference of the Vantawng group of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) held at Buangpui village in Serchhip district.

Thenzawl, located about 90 km from Aizawl, falls under the Serchhip constituency from which Lalduhoma was elected consecutively in the 2018 and 2023 Assembly elections. The town is known for its vibrant Mizo handloom industry and popular tourist destinations such as Vantawng Falls—the highest waterfall in the state—Deer Park, and the State Lone’s golf course and resort.

Lalduhoma also announced the government’s plan to construct a ropeway at Vantawng Falls to further promote tourism in the region.

Touching upon the issue of drug abuse and trafficking, the chief minister reiterated his government’s strong stance, saying that it would not tolerate smugglers responsible for the destruction of youth through drugs. He emphasized the administration’s focus on moral reformation and said continued efforts will be made in that direction.

He acknowledged the role of civil society organizations, particularly the YMA, as key partners in promoting social reformation and security, as well as in fighting the drug menace.
