Mizoram Declared India’s First Fully Literate State

AIZAWL, May 20: In a historic achievement for India’s educational landscape, Mizoram has become the first fully literate state under the ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) initiative, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced today at a celebratory event held at the MZU Auditorium.

The occasion was graced by Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Education, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, and Dr. Vanlalthlana, Mizoram’s Minister of Education, who served as Guests of Honour.

The Chief Minister hailed the achievement as a historic and transformational moment, highlighting the dedication of 1,692 individuals who pursued education despite earlier missed opportunities. He emphasized that this milestone marks the beginning of a new era focused on digital literacy, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial skills for all Mizos.

Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary congratulated Mizoram for its commitment to inclusive growth through education and expressed confidence that the state would continue to lead in lifelong learning and skill development. The event was chaired by Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena, who presented an overview of Mizoram’s literacy journey.

Mizoram’s success is attributed to sustained efforts by the School Education Department through initiatives like Samagra Shiksha and the New India Literacy Programme. The State Literacy Mission Authority, supported by the State Centre for Literacy, developed tailored learning materials in Mizo and English, and recruited 292 volunteer teachers to provide education across various community settings.
