Aizawl, September 12: Mizoram Governor General (Retd.) Vijay Kumar Singh has underlined the complexities of Myanmar’s internal political divisions while emphasizing the deep-rooted cultural and social ties that bind communities across the India–Myanmar border.
Addressing the media, Singh said Myanmar has witnessed recurring phases of instability, from the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi to military rule, and now fresh elections looming. “There are internal differences in Myanmar because first there was Aung San Suu Kyi, then the military junta came… Now elections are going to be held again,” he remarked.
He pointed out that Myanmar’s rich diversity, marked by multiple tribal groups, often leads to tensions when inclusivity is lacking. “In diversity, when you do not connect with anyone completely, then problems arise,” Singh noted.
The Governor also highlighted the strong cultural and ancestral bonds shared by border populations in Mizoram and Myanmar. “We have good relations with Myanmar. In our border area, the tribal community is the same on both sides. People come to our side for shelter when there is some problem on the other side,” he said.
