Mizoram on High Alert Amid Fears of Influx from Assam, Tripura, and Manipur

Aizawl, July 31: In response to Assam’s intensified efforts to detect and deport foreign nationals, Mizoram has ramped up security across its borders with neighbouring states to prevent any potential influx. State Home Minister K Sapdanga announced that police stations, outposts, and key checkpoints along the inter-state borders with Assam, Tripura, and Manipur have been placed on high alert.

“We are taking all necessary precautions to prevent any unwanted influx across our borders, especially from those being expelled by our neighbouring states,” Sapdanga said. Additional security personnel are being deployed at strategic entry points to curb unauthorized entry, particularly from foreign nationals being deported by Assam.

Authorities are also reinforcing enforcement of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, which regulates the entry of non-residents into Mizoram. Special attention is being paid to areas like Sairang and other villages where new railway stations are expected to become operational soon, to ensure that the ILP regime is strictly enforced.

The heightened alert follows Assam’s large-scale deportation campaign, which includes efforts to expel over 29 lakh illegal immigrants, many of whom are believed to be Bangladeshi nationals. Mizoram fears a spillover of deportees trying to enter the state illegally.

In light of the situation, the Central Committee of the Young Mizo Association (CYMA) convened an emergency meeting on Monday night to assess the risk. In a statement released Tuesday, CYMA expressed concern over the potential threat posed by foreign nationals entering Mizoram as a result of Assam’s deportations. It urged the state government to act swiftly and strengthen border security and ILP enforcement.

“We call upon the Mizoram government to urgently bolster its ILP mechanisms and implement necessary measures to secure the state,” the statement read. CYMA has also directed its sub-headquarters, local branches, and border groups to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Members have been asked to take immediate action upon detecting signs of illegal immigration.

The People’s Conference (PC) party also issued a statement warning of the “demographic nightmare” that could result from Assam’s deportation drive. The party raised concerns about the possible influx of Bangladeshi nationals into Mizoram and urged authorities to take preemptive steps to protect the state’s demographic balance and internal security.
