Imphal, July 25: The Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF), a proscribed armed group, has strongly condemned what it calls deliberate attempts to distort Manipur’s historical narrative, particularly in the wake of ongoing ethnic tensions since May 3, 2023.
In a press release, the MNPF accused various Kuki organisations of spreading fabricated narratives aimed at misleading the public and provoking inter-community discord. The MNPF specifically criticised a recent statement by a group called “Young Kuki,” which claimed that the Naga people migrated to the Kuki Hills after separating from the Meetei community. The MNPF dismissed the claim as “provocative and historically baseless.”
The outfit alleged that some Kuki intellectuals were intentionally misinforming their youth, potentially inciting further unrest in an already fragile environment. It warned that such rhetoric, if unchecked, could destabilise the region and deepen the ethnic divide.
Reiterating its stance, the MNPF declared that the Meetei and Naga communities are the indigenous inhabitants of Manipur and urged all parties to respect the state’s authentic historical record. It called for responsible public discourse and cautioned against the use of historical revisionism for political or territorial gains.
The group’s statement underscores the deep-seated mistrust and sensitive nature of ethnic relations in Manipur, where narratives of identity and belonging remain highly contested.
