GUWAHATI, Dec 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are set to visit Assam later this month as the BJP intensifies its development push and political outreach ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The visits will feature inaugurations of major infrastructure projects and interactions with party workers, underscoring a coordinated strategy that blends governance with electoral mobilisation.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Prime Minister Modi will arrive on December 20 to inaugurate the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, built at a cost of around ₹4,000 crore. Designed with indigenous bamboo and inspired by the traditional kopou phool (foxtail orchid), the terminal aims to showcase Assam’s cultural identity alongside world-class aviation facilities. An 80-foot statue of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi will also be unveiled. Sarma said future plans include an elevated corridor connecting the airport to Jalukbari, an aerocity project, an aircraft MRO hub, and an aviation training school to generate employment.

After the airport programme, Modi will attend meetings in Guwahati and interact with BJP workers before visiting the inland waterways terminal on the Brahmaputra on December 21. He will undertake a ferry journey on the river, participate in a Pariksha Pe Charcha session with students, and pay homage at the Assam Movement Martyrs’ Memorial—marking the first such visit by a sitting Prime Minister. Modi will later travel to Dibrugarh, being developed as Assam’s second capital, with a focus on expanding the Namrup fertiliser plant through a ₹10,000-crore project aimed at boosting urea production and self-reliance.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Assam on December 29, where he will inaugurate development works at Batadrava and Borduwa, including the Bhagawat Griha, and launch a state-wide CCTV surveillance project. He will also inaugurate the Jyoti-Bishnu auditorium and is expected to return next month to lay the foundation stone for the new Assam Legislative Assembly complex in Dibrugarh.

The back-to-back visits by the BJP’s top leadership follow multiple tours earlier this year and signal a renewed focus on infrastructure-led growth and political engagement as Assam heads toward the 2026 Assembly polls.
