IMPHAL, Oct 28: Manipur Lok Sabha MP Dr. Bimol Akoijam on Monday launched a sharp attack on former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, accusing him of “hypocrisy, misinformation, and political insincerity” in his recent remarks on the state’s ongoing crisis.

Speaking at a press conference, Akoijam alleged that Biren Singh had “no moral right” to comment on the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs), claiming the crisis was “a direct result of his own failures as Chief Minister and Home Minister.”

“The IDP crisis was born out of his failure,” Akoijam said. “He presided over the violence that destroyed homes and took innocent lives. Had he protected the people, there would have been no IDPs in the first place.”

Citing a government meeting held on July 12, 2025, Akoijam said the administration admitted that the total number of displaced households remained unclear even after two years. “That shows how casual and insensitive the government has been. Even today, there’s no accurate data,” he remarked.

The MP further accused the previous government of failing to deliver on its Rs 1 lakh compensation promise to affected families. “Most received only Rs 25,000, while some got nothing at all. The camps are wretched, neglected, and forgotten,” he added, accusing Biren Singh of “shedding crocodile tears” for victims he failed to protect.

Responding to Singh’s recent jibe about him speaking English to an Army officer, Akoijam said the remark revealed “a narrow and outdated mindset.”

“He mocked me for speaking English to a non-Manipuri officer. But our youth thrive across India in hotels and hospitals because of their command of English. Discouraging the language is like denying them opportunities,” Akoijam asserted.
