NEW DELHI, Dec 6: Manipur MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on Friday urged the Union Government to announce a clear, time-bound and transparent roadmap for the resettlement of thousands of internally displaced families still living in relief camps more than a year after the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Akoijam said the prolonged displacement had severely eroded public trust, stressing that affected families must be safely and honourably rehabilitated before the crisis enters its third year. He delivered his intervention in Manipuri, underscoring the urgency and emotional weight of the crisis on the ground.
The MP alleged that security personnel had recently used excessive force against displaced people protesting for rehabilitation, warning that such actions further weaken efforts to reach a lasting solution. He also claimed that the current impasse appears to align with demands from certain Kuki groups opposed to resettlement, and accused individuals with “vested interests” of obstructing the return of affected residents.
Akoijam criticised what he described as governmental irresponsibility that had allowed the humanitarian situation to deepen, and called on the Centre to take decisive steps to restore dignity, security and stability to those uprooted by the conflict.
He emphasised that only a credible, transparent plan can ensure that displaced families finally rebuild their lives without further delay.
