Imphal, September 22: Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba has lodged a formal police complaint against an X (formerly Twitter) user, accusing her of defaming him by falsely portraying him as a leader of the Meitei organisation Arambai Tenggol.
According to the complaint filed by his personal secretary, Maisnam Shivadutta, the user identified as Shalini Shukla allegedly shared a photograph of the MP along with a caption suggesting his association with the recent ambush on Assam Rifles personnel at Nambol Sabal Leikai.
The complaint described the post as an act of “character assassination of a Member of Parliament” and a “deliberate attempt to tarnish his image.” It further stated that such misleading content not only defames the MP but also attempts to spread misinformation during a sensitive time in the state.
Addressed to both the Director General of Police, Manipur, and the Cyber Crime Unit, the complaint urged authorities to take strict legal action against the user for the “misleading and defamatory” post.
Leishemba, a descendant of Manipur’s royal family, was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in 2020 and has since maintained a low-profile political presence. His office stated that while constructive criticism is welcome, baseless allegations linking him to militant organisations amount to targeted defamation and cannot be overlooked.
