Imphal, July 25: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President K. Meghachandra has strongly criticized the NDA-led Central government for its move to extend President’s Rule in Manipur for another six months, calling it a “serious blow” to democratic principles and federalism.
Speaking to reporters during a free medical camp at Lamboi Khongnangkhong Club in Uripok Assembly Constituency, Meghachandra stated that the decision undermines the will of the people and reflects a failure of leadership within the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “Despite having the numbers, the BJP failed to elect a capable leader, resulting in a political vacuum and the continuation of President’s Rule,” he said.
The Congress leader argued that President’s Rule should be a temporary measure to restore law and order, not a prolonged political solution. He warned that repeated extensions set a dangerous precedent that erodes democratic governance and weakens constitutional institutions.
Meghachandra further lambasted both the central and former BJP-led state governments for not initiating any concrete peace process to resolve the long-standing ethnic conflict in Manipur. He also condemned the absence of an all-party meeting to discuss a roadmap forward, accusing the BJP of avoiding inclusive dialogue.
Criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Meghachandra said, “The PM has remained silent on Manipur’s crisis for over two years. His silence speaks volumes and signals the BJP’s indifference toward resolving the situation.”
The MPCC chief concluded by asserting that the crisis could have been avoided with responsible political leadership and genuine efforts at reconciliation.
