MSF seeks urgent action against racism after Tripura student’s killing in Uttarakhand

IMPHAL, Dec 29: The Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) has demanded immediate and decisive action from the Centre and the Uttarakhand government to address racism and ensure the safety of students from Northeast India, following the killing of a Tripura student in Dehradun.

Referring to the death of Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, the federation said he was allegedly assaulted in Dehradun on December 9, 2025, and succumbed to his injuries on December 26. According to the MSF, the attack involved racial slurs and multiple stab wounds. The organisation cited the victim’s family as alleging that the assailants were intoxicated and targeted him because of his physical appearance.

In a statement, the MSF said the incident once again highlighted the persistent problem of racism, discrimination and hatred faced by people from the Northeast in other parts of the country. Such acts, it said, were unacceptable in a democratic society and demanded firm and swift intervention by the authorities.

The federation urged the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister and the Uttarakhand Chief Minister to ensure the immediate arrest of all those involved in the crime and the initiation of strict legal action. It also called upon the central government to introduce special protective measures for students and residents from the Northeast who live, work or pursue education outside the region.

Stating that people from the Northeast continue to face racial abuse, stereotyping and social exclusion due to their physical features, the MSF warned that such an environment often leads to hate crimes and physical violence, posing a serious threat to social harmony.

Emphasising that students are the future of the nation, the federation said safeguarding their safety, dignity and well-being is a fundamental responsibility of the government, and expressed hope that concrete steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents and ensure a safe and secure environment for students from Northeast India across the country.
