“My friend, don’t cross the line”: Manipur MP Leishemba Sanajaoba to Mizoram MP K Vanlalvena

IMPHAL, Nov 25: Manipur MP, Leishemba Sanajaoba, has strongly criticized Mizoram MP K Vanlalvena for proposing the creation of separate administrative units for the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities to resolve the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. Sanajaoba urged Vanlalvena not to “cross the line” and emphasized that he should focus on issues within his own state, rather than interfering in Manipur’s internal affairs.

Vanlalvena, a leader of the Mizo National Front (MNF), had earlier called for the removal of the N Biren Singh-led government in Manipur and the imposition of President’s rule to address the escalating violence that has claimed over 250 lives since May 2023. He suggested that the central government should demarcate areas controlled by both the Meitei and tribal communities, and create separate administrative units to help resolve the ongoing conflict.

In response, Sanajaoba took to social media to express his disapproval, urging Vanlalvena to respect Manipur’s sovereignty and avoid meddling in the state’s affairs. He also stressed the importance of maintaining peaceful relations between neighboring states and pointed out that such interventions were unhelpful to the delicate situation in Manipur. The ethnic divide between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, with the latter having ethnic ties to Mizoram, continues to fuel tensions in the region, complicating the potential solutions to the crisis.

Vanlalvena’s call for the creation of separate administrative units comes amid a growing divide between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. He cited a “very wide” divide between the two groups as a reason for the proposal, which aims to address the violent conflict and the ethnic tensions surrounding it.

Sanajaoba responded firmly to Vanlalvena’s suggestions, posting on social media: “My friend, don’t cross the line. Please confine yourself to your state issues. Stop interfering in Manipur’s issue. Be a good neighbour.” His statement further underlined the need for a solution that respects Manipur’s autonomy and sovereignty while maintaining good neighborly relations.
