Naga Students’ Organization Myanmar Extends Solidarity with UNC, Rejects Divisive Border Policies

Lahe, August 27: The Naga Students’ Organization, Myanmar (NSO-M) has declared its full support for the United Naga Council’s (UNC) stand on divisive border policies and the withdrawal of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar.

In a press statement, the NSO-M lauded the UNC for its bold and principled leadership during what it described as a critical moment in the Naga people’s shared political journey.

“We commend the UNC for its unwavering commitment to the political future, territorial integrity, and unity of the Naga people. Its leadership, courage, and determination inspire Nagas across all borders—particularly those of us in Eastern Nagaland (Myanmar), who continue to face the brunt of state neglect, militarization, and the effects of unjust border policies,” the statement read.

The student organization reiterated its rejection of the Free Movement Regime (FMR), recently scrapped by the Government of India. It asserted that Naga movement across ancestral lands has always been a birthright, rooted in history, culture, and kinship—long predating the drawing of international borders.

Calling the withdrawal of the FMR a shock, the NSO-M alleged that the move exposes the deeper intent of both Indian and Myanmar governments to divide and control the Naga people. “The imposition of movement restrictions and the construction of border fencing through Naga villages and sacred lands are clear attempts to sever our people, erase our unity, and undermine our political aspirations. The fencing of our lands-where our ancestors once walked freely—amounts to a cultural and political assault that no Naga, anywhere, should tolerate,” the statement further read.

The NSO-M further resolved:

  • To strongly condemn the actions of the Government of India and denounce the silence of the Government of Myanmar.
  • To reject the legitimacy of the FMR, past or present, as it falsely assumes control over indigenous lands and identities.
  • To demand an immediate halt to border fencing and the reversal of all restrictive policies affecting the Naga people.

The student body also urged all Naga organizations, tribal councils, student unions, and youth movements to unite in resistance before it is too late. It appealed to the international community and human rights defenders to recognize what it called a blatant violation of indigenous rights and extend solidarity to the Naga cause.

“We were never divided by consent, and no policy, border, or government can ever rewrite our identity or destiny. Nagalim lives in the heart of every Naga, across every boundary—and no fence can contain that spirit,” the statement concluded.
