IMPHAL, Oct 3: The All Naga Traders Association Manipur (ANTAM) has raised serious concerns about the rising issue of illegal tax collection and harassment directed at businesses, truckers and transporters, especially along the Kangpokpi to Imphal route.
In a press release, ANTAM reports that these unlawful practices have become increasingly prevalent, further aggravated by the state government’s apparent disregard for the community’s difficulties. It also states that truck drivers are facing threats and extortion under the guise of ensuring their safety.
Despite numerous complaints from those impacted, these illegal activities persist, causing significant distress within the trading community. The Committee of Tribal Unity (COTU) has been demanding unauthorized fees at checkpoints, targeting trucks carrying goods as well as those returning empty after deliveries, all under the pretense of soliciting donations.
Consequently, the association has warned that if no resolution is achieved, they will initiate an indefinite economic blockade along National Highway No. 2 (Senapati to Imphal road), set to begin at midnight on October 8, 2024.
ANTAM is actively working to address these urgent concerns to ensure a steady supply of essential goods and services to the valley region. The association has called on the state government to take immediate action to eliminate these illegal practices and safeguard the well-being of truckers and the broader business community.
