Naga Unity Essential for Political Solution, Says Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio

KOHIMA, May 3: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has called for unified action among Naga groups to overcome divisions that are hindering the resolution of critical issues, particularly the long-standing Naga political issue.

Speaking at the Moatsü-cum-Mini Hornbill Festival 2025 in Mokokchung District on Friday, Rio highlighted the negative impact of fragmented organizations within the Naga community.

The Chief Minister emphasized that without unity, it is extremely difficult to resolve any issue. “Unless Nagas come together, with this kind of division in hand, it is very difficult to resolve any issue,” Rio stated during his address at the festival.

In his speech, CM Rio called on all Naga groups to unite and make common decisions that would benefit the Naga people, stressing that “Unity is the need of the day.” He also expressed concerns about the growing number of organizations in the state and the division of leadership. “Too many organizations have too many heads with too many taxes and problems,” he said, emphasizing the need to address this fragmentation.

During the festival, Chief Minister Rio also offered Moatsü greetings and elaborated on the significance of tribal festivals in Naga culture. He recalled how forefathers used festivals to seek blessings for safety and prosperity, highlighting the deep cultural roots of the event. “Though we became Christians, we remember the good and best practices of our forefathers,” Rio remarked, reflecting on the importance of preserving traditional values.

Rio further characterized festivals as times to renew friendships, practice forgiveness, and strengthen bonds among the Naga people. He expressed his hope that such events would continue to foster brotherhood and a sense of family across all Naga tribes.
