DIMAPUR, Nov 9: The School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University (SAS-NU), Medziphema campus, recently organized a two-day interstate training and exposure visit for 10 farmers from Senapati district, Manipur, under the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) on November 7 and 8. The initiative, part of ATMA Senapati’s ongoing outreach efforts in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Government of Manipur, aimed to improve the farmers’ skills and knowledge in modern farming practices.
In the introductory session, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Akali Sema and Dean Prof. L Daiho of SAS-NU encouraged the visiting farmers, emphasizing the importance of agricultural advancement and farmer education for regional development.
The program was coordinated by Dr. Mary N Odyuo, head of the Farmers Cell (FC), with Dr. Lanunola Tzudir, Dr. Sentimenla Jamir, and Dr. Deepa Thangjam guiding the farmers through various university facilities. On the first day, the farmers visited multiple research facilities, including the STINER Centre, vermi-compost unit, mushroom unit, library, museum, All India Coordinated Research Project on Vegetable Crops (AICRP-VC), as well as the horticulture farm, poultry and piggery units, and apiculture farms. These tours provided the farmers with valuable insights into innovative agricultural practices and ongoing research.
The second day focused on a training session on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), led by Dr. Sabbithi Pavan, an assistant professor and FC member in the Department of Entomology. The session aimed to promote sustainable agricultural methods and equip farmers with effective pest management strategies. The day concluded with a guided tour of the Entomology Museum, allowing farmers hands-on experience with pest identification through specimen examination.
This training and exposure visit is part of a broader effort to empower farmers in sustainable practices, with the ultimate goal of enhancing agricultural productivity in the region.
