Narendra Modi Becomes India’s Second Longest-Serving Prime Minister, Surpasses Indira Gandhi’s Record

New Delhi, July 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially become India’s second longest-serving Prime Minister, surpassing the record held by late Indira Gandhi. On Friday, Modi completed 4,078 consecutive days in office, edging past Gandhi’s 4,077-day tenure from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977.

With this milestone, Modi now stands behind only Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, who holds the record for the longest uninterrupted stint in the country’s top office.

PM Modi’s rise from humble beginnings in Vadnagar, Gujarat — where he helped his father sell tea — to the highest office in the land is widely seen as a remarkable political journey. Before assuming office at the Centre in 2014, Modi served as Gujarat’s chief minister for over 12 years. Since then, he has led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to three consecutive Lok Sabha victories in 2014, 2019, and 2024 — a feat unmatched by any non-Congress leader in India’s history.

He is also the first Prime Minister born after Independence, the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister, and the longest-serving Prime Minister from a non-Hindi-speaking state. Additionally, Modi remains the only non-Congress leader to have completed two full terms and be re-elected twice with an outright majority in the Lok Sabha.

Modi’s tenure has seen significant shifts in India’s domestic and foreign policy narratives, with an emphasis on nationalism, economic reforms, digital infrastructure, and strong global positioning. As he enters the next phase of his leadership, analysts say this milestone further consolidates his place as one of the most influential political figures in modern Indian history.
