NEW DELHI, May 17: Olympic gold medalist and world champion Neeraj Chopra scripted history at the Doha Diamond League 2025 on Friday by breaching the 90-metre mark in the javelin throw for the first time in his career. With a monumental third-round throw of 90.23 metres, Chopra not only achieved his personal best but also set a new national record, becoming the first Indian athlete ever to cross the 90-metre barrier in the sport.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Chopra on this landmark achievement, hailing it as a testament to the athlete’s hard work, discipline, and passion. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said, “A spectacular feat! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra for breaching the 90 m mark at Doha Diamond League 2025 and achieving his personal best throw. This is the outcome of his relentless dedication, discipline and passion. India is elated and proud.”
Chopra’s historic performance earned him a second-place finish in a tightly contested event. Germany’s Julian Weber clinched the gold with a dramatic final-round throw of 91.06 metres, surpassing Chopra in the dying moments of the competition.
Chopra’s 90.23m effort surpasses his previous best of 89.94m, achieved during the 2022 Stockholm Diamond League. The throw marks a significant milestone not just in Chopra’s career but also in Indian athletics, underlining the country’s growing presence on the global track and field stage.
