SHILLONG, June 12: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior academic from North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, after he was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of ₹3.43 lakh in connection with supply contracts for scientific equipment and laboratory materials.

Dr. Nirmalendu Saha, who holds the dual roles of Dean of the School of Life Sciences and Professor of Zoology at NEHU, was apprehended during a trap operation on Wednesday. Also arrested was Pranjal Sharma, a businessman from Beltola, Guwahati, who allegedly acted as the middleman in the bribery scheme. The operation was carried out at the Guwahati University Guest House.

According to sources within the CBI, the investigation began after credible intelligence pointed to widespread corrupt practices involving the procurement process at the university. Saha allegedly conspired with Sharma, the proprietor of a supply firm, to manipulate supply orders in exchange for kickbacks.

The case was formally registered on Wednesday after source information revealed the structured nature of the alleged corruption. Acting swiftly, the CBI laid a trap and caught the accused during the actual transaction of bribe money, confirming suspicions of illicit dealings tied to contract awards.

Both Saha and Sharma are scheduled to be presented before a competent court in Guwahati on Thursday.

The CBI has expanded its investigation, carrying out searches at multiple premises linked to the accused. Raids at two locations have already led to the recovery of incriminating documents, while a third site is currently under search. Officials say the evidence will help uncover the full scope of the corruption network.
