Kathmandu, Sept 28: Nepal is dealing with severe flooding and landslides caused by heavy rainfall that began on Thursday, resulting in at least 60 deaths and over 60 injuries, according to officials on Saturday. The Kathmandu Valley has been the hardest hit, with 34 casualties reported.
Authorities stated that 79 people are still missing across the country, including 16 in Kathmandu. More than 3,000 individuals have been rescued as flash floods persist.
In light of the situation, Acting Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh held an emergency meeting with key ministers and security leaders to enhance search and rescue operations. The government has mandated a three-day closure of all schools and suspended ongoing exams.
Key highways remain blocked at 63 locations, hindering rescue efforts, while all access points to Kathmandu are obstructed by landslides. The city also faced a day-long power outage due to damage to the main transmission line, though electricity was restored in the evening. Additionally, 226 houses in Kathmandu have been flooded, leading to the deployment of around 3,000 security personnel for rescue missions.
