GUWAHATI, Dec 23:   Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced on Monday that newly recruited police cadets from Meitei and Kuki communities would be posted together as a team. This initiative aims to foster peace and unity in the violence-hit northeastern state.

Nearly 2,000 recruits of the Manipur Police passed out from the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy, strengthening the state’s police force. The passing-out parade was attended by Assam and Manipur Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Singh, who served as chief guests at the ceremony.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Singh emphasized the need to work together to rebuild harmony in Manipur. “The community-wise division took place due to the present situation. It was not like this earlier, and I will not allow this to happen in future,” he said.

Singh added that the newly trained personnel would continue working together as they did during their training. “We have to start working together to bring peace to the state. Their postings will be together. We will not break the team. We will try to restore the unity of earlier Manipur,” he asserted.

The batch of 1,946 police recruits includes a diverse caste distribution, with 62% being Meiteis, 12% Kukis, and the remaining 26% comprising Nagas and other tribes.

When asked about the law and order situation in the state, the Chief Minister acknowledged its complexity and said it would take time to stabilize. However, he assured that peace was gradually returning to Manipur.

Singh also addressed the issue of illegal immigration, particularly the recent arrests of Bangladeshi nationals entering Manipur illegally. He pointed out that this is a regional issue affecting states like Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh as well. “Bangladeshis illegally entering India are being arrested in Manipur, Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal. We all have to tackle it together as it is our region’s issue,” Singh said.
