IMPHAL, May 19: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested one of the individuals allegedly involved in the deadly 2024 attack on an India Reserve Battalion (IRB) post in the Moreh area of Manipur’s Tengnoupal district. The incident, which occurred on January 17 last year, claimed the life of one Manipur Police personnel and left two others seriously injured.
The accused, identified as Thangminlar Mate alias Lenin Mate, a resident of Tengnoupal, was apprehended by the NIA in Silchar, Assam, on Sunday, the agency confirmed in a statement issued Monday. According to the NIA, Mate’s affiliation to any militant group has not yet been established.
This marks the first arrest in connection with the case, registered under RC-05/2024/NIA/IMP. The Silchar court has granted transit remand custody of the accused to the NIA for production before the Special NIA Court in Guwahati.
The arrest is considered a major breakthrough in the investigation into the coordinated and lethal assault that shook the law enforcement establishment in Manipur early last year.
