Northeast Set to Become India’s Next Major Tourism Frontier: Scindia

NEW DELHI, Dec 3: The Northeast is poised to emerge as one of India’s most attractive tourism frontiers, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said on Tuesday. He emphasised that the region’s cultural richness, natural diversity and strategic potential position it for transformative growth in the tourism sector.

Speaking at the fourth meeting of the high-level tourism task force in the national capital, Scindia highlighted the need for strengthening last-mile connectivity, integrated planning and sustainable development to unlock long-term benefits for local communities and the wider economy.

The Ministry of DoNER has constituted eight high-level tourism task forces, each led by a Chief Minister of a Northeastern state, with the Union DoNER Minister and three other state CMs as members. The initiative aims to create a collaborative framework for shaping a unified, action-driven tourism roadmap for the region.

Scindia praised the Meghalaya government for its presentation and urged it to submit the final report after incorporating suggestions from all task force members. According to the ministry, the session marked a crucial step in refining priorities, identifying challenges and accelerating coordinated implementation among states.

Deliberations focused on unlocking the region’s untapped tourism potential by enhancing multimodal connectivity, building world-class infrastructure, promoting globally marketable destinations, and expanding adventure, eco-tourism and culture-based tourism products.

The meeting also stressed the importance of strengthening skill development, standardising service delivery and boosting capacity-building to ensure sustainable industry growth and more employment opportunities for local communities.

Additionally, Scindia proposed developing an annual festival calendar showcasing major cultural events across the Northeast to promote wider cultural appreciation and increase tourist inflow.
