SENAPATI, May 28:     The Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) has voiced serious concern regarding a recent circular issued by SAHILCA, which invited members of the Gorkha community to a meeting intended to deliberate on Panchayat-related matters and a recent press release by the Manipur Gorkha Union (MGU).

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the NPO urged SAHILCA to refrain from holding such a meeting, especially during the current sensitive and volatile situation prevailing in the state. The organisation cautioned that convening such gatherings could lead to unnecessary confusion and tension among communities.

The NPO emphasized that discussions concerning the Panchayat system or community-based decision-making cannot be taken unilaterally by a single community. It also pointed out that Kangpokpi district is home to several Naga villages and ancestral lands.

“Any attempt to exclude the voice of the Nagas would be incomplete and potentially divisive and few Gorkha villages have no authorities to make any decision for the entire Gorkha in the state,” the statement read.

The NPO underscored that Kangpokpi is a shared space where multiple communities coexist. The organization appealed to all concerned parties to act with caution, wisdom, and respect for every community’s rights and sentiments.

“Let us collectively avoid any action that may sow misunderstanding or disharmony among ourselves,” the NPO stated in its release.
