IMPHAL, Dec 9: Newly appointed National Vice President of the National People’s Party (NPP), Irengbam Hemochandra Singh, arrived in Imphal on Tuesday and vowed to work with renewed commitment for the people while bolstering the party’s organisational strength across the Northeast.
Speaking to reporters, Hemochandra thanked NPP National President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for reposing faith in him. He described the party leadership as “visionary,” adding that the NPP has the potential to drive meaningful political and developmental change in the region.
The NPP formally announced his appointment for the 2025–2028 term under Article 11 of its constitution, a move seen as part of the party’s strategy to elevate experienced leaders into national roles.
A veteran political leader, Hemochandra is a five-time MLA from Singjamei and has helmed multiple ministerial portfolios. In 2010, he made history as the youngest Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly after being unanimously elected by both ruling and opposition members.
Hemochandra, who was earlier a prominent figure in the Indian National Congress, resigned from the party in March 2024 citing a loss of confidence in its state leadership before joining the NPP. In his new position, he is expected to help strengthen the party’s organisational framework and expand its political footprint across the Northeast.
