SHILLONG, Nov 17: The Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP) on Sunday withdrew its support to the BJP-led government in Manipur, led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, citing “deep concern” over the ongoing law and order situation in the state. The NPP expressed its dissatisfaction with the Manipur government’s failure to quell the violence that has plagued the state for months, blaming the unrest between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups for severely disrupting normal life.

In a statement, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma pointed directly to his Manipur counterpart, accusing Biren Singh of failing to restore peace and stability. “We strongly feel that the Manipur State Government under the leadership of Shri Biren Singh has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy,” Sangma said. He added that the NPP had no choice but to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh-led government, effective immediately.

The withdrawal of support comes amid continuing violence in Manipur, where clashes between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have led to months of unrest, leaving hundreds dead and thousands displaced. The violence has significantly disrupted daily life, with curfews in place across several districts and rising concerns over public safety.

The NPP, which is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition along with the BJP, has been increasingly vocal in its criticism of the Manipur government’s handling of the crisis. Sangma’s remarks highlight growing frustration within the alliance, as the situation in Manipur continues to deteriorate.
