ITANAGAR, July 7: A suspected cadre of the NSCN (K-YA) was killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district on Sunday. The gunfight erupted in the dense forests near Khogla village under Wakka Circle, close to the India–Myanmar border, during a joint operation by the Assam Rifles and Army Special Forces.
The operation was launched based on credible intelligence inputs about the presence of insurgents in the area. As the troops were combing the forest terrain, they came under sudden fire from a group of seven to eight armed militants. The security forces responded swiftly, triggering an intense exchange of gunfire that resulted in the death of one militant. The remaining insurgents managed to flee into the nearby jungle, prompting a large-scale search operation that remains ongoing.
During the post-operation sweep, troops discovered a temporary militant hideout and recovered a substantial cache of arms and explosives from the site. The recovered materials include two pistols with magazines, a 15 kg improvised explosive device, 34 detonators, and other warlike stores, suggesting the group may have been planning a significant militant action in the region.
Officials said the timely operation likely thwarted a major threat to security in the sensitive border district, which has witnessed sporadic militant activity in recent years.
