Kohima, October 23: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has strongly condemned the alleged drone assault carried out on October 20 at Khammoi village in Mon district, reportedly by Indian armed forces, which resulted in the deaths of two civilians and damage to private property.
In a statement signed by NSF President Mteisuding and General Secretary Kenilo Kent on Thursday, the NSF described the incident as a “targeted drone assault” that claimed the lives of Late Eno Khampei Wangsa, Joint Secretary of the Khammoi Students’ Union, and Late Phiphot Wangsu, an eight-year-old student of Khammoi Mission School. The Federation said their lives were “abruptly extinguished in an act that defies every standard of humanity.”
The NSF asserted that the use of combat drones and explosives in civilian-populated areas “amounts to a direct violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the Geneva Conventions, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), among other international humanitarian laws.”
Calling the incident a grave human rights violation, the Federation urged the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to initiate an independent, international fact-finding mission, and appealed to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to issue a situational report on alleged abuses under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).
“The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act continues to provide legal immunity to excesses of force, creating an ecosystem where accountability becomes optional,” the NSF stated, reiterating its “unwavering demand for the immediate and unconditional repeal of AFSPA from the Naga homeland.”
The Federation further announced that it would continue its non-cooperation policy with armed forces across all federating units and subordinate bodies “until AFSPA is repealed,” in protest against what it termed “militarization and state-sponsored violence.”
Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, the NSF said, “Their loss is a collective wound upon the conscience of humanity.” It urged all democratic nations, humanitarian organizations, and global citizens “to condemn this atrocity and ensure accountability within the frameworks of international criminal law.
