IMPHAL, Feb 25: Former Chief Minister of Manipur, O Ibobi Singh, addressing a gathering in Konthoujam, Imphal West district on Monday, asserted that only the Congress party could establish a firm government in the state and bring lasting peace. He emphasized that despite the BJP and its allies holding over 50 of the 60 seats in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, they have failed to ensure peace and harmony in the state.
“Only the Congress can bring a firm government in India and Manipur. It is necessary for all to work to strengthen the Congress. Only when the Congress government is formed, there will be peace in Manipur,” Singh stated.
The leader of the Congress legislature party also criticized the BJP’s governance, alleging that despite having a clear majority in the state assembly, including support from their allies, the BJP had not been able to address the ongoing issues. He claimed that the BJP was unable to govern the state in a manner that promoted peace, despite having the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre. Singh further accused the BJP of treating the situation in Manipur as mere spectators, without taking substantial action.
Singh also pointed out the Prime Minister’s silence on the ethnic conflict in the state, noting that while Modi had visited neighboring states, he had not addressed the unrest in Manipur. “Such a party has systematically manipulated the Constitution and the ideals of Bapu,” Singh remarked, expressing his dissatisfaction with the BJP’s approach.
Commenting on the resignation of N Biren Singh as Chief Minister, Singh suggested that despite the BJP’s absolute majority in the assembly, they had not formed a new government. He criticized this inaction as an infringement on the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
Furthermore, Singh condemned the contradiction between the democratic ideals that India is globally known for and the current situation in Manipur, calling it a “total contradiction.” He also warned that if the BJP had secured an absolute majority in Parliament, they would have likely altered the Constitution to fit their agenda.
