ACCRA, July 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Ghana’s highest civilian award, ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’, during his historic state visit to the West African nation on Wednesday. The honour was presented by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama in recognition of Modi’s “distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi said, “Honoured to be conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’. A testament to the deep and long-standing India-Ghana ties.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the development and said the Prime Minister dedicated the prestigious honour to the 1.4 billion people of India, India’s youth, and the country’s vibrant cultural traditions. “He thanked the government and people of Ghana for this exceptional honour,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also lauded the recognition, writing on X, “Fitting that PM @narendramodi has been conferred with Ghana’s national honour. It is a recognition of his steadfast efforts in strengthening the voice of the Global South, and a testament to our cooperation and friendship with Ghana.”
The Prime Minister highlighted that shared democratic values and historical ties between the two nations have long nurtured the relationship. “The award places a new responsibility on me to embrace and further strengthen the deep-rooted bilateral partnership,” Modi said, as per the MEA statement.
PM Modi’s visit marks the first Prime Ministerial trip to Ghana from India in over 30 years. Earlier in the day, he held wide-ranging talks with President Mahama, following which both countries elevated their relationship to a comprehensive partnership.
The Prime Minister is currently on the first leg of his five-nation tour aimed at deepening India’s global engagements, particularly with nations of the Global South.
