SHILLONG, June 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 123rd episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, spotlighted Meghalaya’s Eri Silk, hailing it as a symbol of India’s sustainable heritage and rich indigenous craftsmanship. The Prime Minister congratulated the people of Meghalaya for Eri Silk’s recent recognition with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, calling it a proud moment for the region and the nation.

“Eri Silk is like a heritage for Meghalaya. The tribes here, especially the Khasi community, have preserved it for generations and enriched it with their skills,” PM Modi said. He emphasized that Eri Silk, often referred to as Ahimsa Silk due to its non-violent method of production, aligns perfectly with today’s global demand for sustainable and ethically-produced goods.

Recognized for its eco-friendly harvesting process—where silkworms are not harmed—Eri Silk is gaining popularity for its versatile qualities. “It keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, making it ideal for various climates,” Modi noted, positioning it as a viable product for global markets.

The Prime Minister also applauded the efforts of women-led Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Meghalaya for preserving and scaling up the traditional craft. “They are not just preserving heritage, but empowering communities through their work,” he said, urging citizens to embrace locally produced textiles as part of the Vocal for Local and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

Eri Silk, especially its GI-tagged variant ‘Ryndia’ handwoven by women in Ri-Bhoi district, has recently been gaining national and international attention. Acknowledging the recognition, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister through a post on X, thanking him for highlighting the cultural importance of Ryndia and applauding designer KINIHO’s efforts in reinterpreting the textile heritage.

In a personal letter to CM Sangma, PM Modi wrote, “Your thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated. Products like Ryndia Silk reflect a growing global commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. The GI tag granted to it further strengthens our resolve to promote such products on the global stage.”

Modi concluded his address by reaffirming his affection for Meghalaya and its people. “Whenever I have visited Meghalaya, I have been overwhelmed by the affection of the people, the pristine natural beauty, and the unlimited potential of its youth,” he said, expressing hope that the state will continue playing a key role in building a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
